Imposter Syndrome
How do we combat the feelings of not belonging or that we aren't walking the right path for our life?
There are two major factors: 1) external and 2) internal. The external factors in the pet care industry that drive us to question ourselves and abilities are mostly the fact that many clients and general public still do not view being in pet care as a legitimate business or way of earning a living. We have to continually combat and educate on our profession and what it takes to do it.
The external factors also play a role in a feedback loop with the internal factors: our own self doubt. Most of us lack a background in business and are still taking trainings in pet care and proper procedures. Because we have to forge our own paths, we question whether we're doing it right. We question whether we could do better.
That's why community and relationships are so important. Get connected with local business owners; both in the pet care industry and outside of it.
You'll get to see others struggling with your same questions and be a part of a supportive group of people that want to see you succeed. Secondly, don't stop learning! Continue going to conferences, participating in Facebook groups, and reading/listening to learn what you can.
The key step to combating imposter syndrome is that after you get connected with other business owners and you're continuing to learn, share what you've learned! Teach what you know and your story. The more you do that, the more you will see yourself as belonging and contributing to the broader industry.
