What Has Your Attention?
What has your attention right now? You might be reading this while your mind juggles numerous other thoughts.
As I write this, my workspace is a flurry of activity: seven browser tabs open, a notebook at hand, and a phone buzzing with notifications. My thoughts are scattered - a staff member on a new client visit, drafting an SOP for medication handling, and pondering lunch plans amidst a hectic schedule. We often find ourselves navigating through both physical and mental clutter.
This clutter stems from two main sources:
Rumination/Overthinking: This involves constant worrying and negative thought patterns.
Unfinished Tasks: Having a lengthy to-do list and pending tasks add to this clutter.
These factors lead to stress and mental fatigue, making it difficult to focus singularly on tasks. Despite the common belief that multitasking is essential for busy professionals, it hampers our ability to engage in deep, focused work or to enter a state of flow.
So, how do we tackle this?
You might find this simplistic, but the solution is to write it down. I suggest using the traditional pen and paper. Writing aids in clarifying and organizing thoughts by engaging multiple cognitive processes. As David Allen from 'Getting Things Done' says, "Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them."
Here are two types of lists to help with mental clarity:
Worry List: Note down any worries or negative thoughts regarding yourself or your business. This will aid in reflection and identifying thought patterns, guiding you towards a more intentional mindset.
Waiting-On List: Keep track of things you're awaiting, like forms from a CPA, responses from a potential hire, or client communications. This list helps in managing tasks and ensures follow-ups.
We're curious about what's on your lists and how this method works for you.
